Beverly A. Smith


     Beverly A. Smith is an associate superintendent for human resources and equity for the Waterloo Community School District and was appointed to the Board of Educational Examiners in 2005. Born and raised in Iowa, Ms. Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in theatre and elementary education from Cornell College and both a Master of Arts in Education degree in educational psychology and an Educational Doctorate in leadership from the University of Northern Iowa. Prior professional positions include elementary teacher, director of two child development agencies, elementary principal, and adjunct professor in the education departments of both Wartburg College and the University of Northern Iowa. She has been very active in many civic and professional organizations. She is currently serving on the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center board and Iowa Stories 2000 board, and she is president of the local chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Past involvements include an appointment to the Iowa State Board of Regents, the Governor’s Education Roundtable, and the Governor’s Task for Closing the Achievement Gap for African-American Males and service on the boards of Cedar Valley United Way, Family and Children’s Council of Black Hawk County, Black Hawk Leadership, Child Health Specialty Clinics, Hawkeye Community College Foundation, Waterloo Park Commission, KBBG Community Broadcasting and Lily Furgerson Child Development. Awards she has received include the Salute Award from the Northeast Iowa Chapter of Women in Communications, Inc., KBBG Citizen of the Year (1998) and Distinguished Emeritus of the University of Northern Iowa Price Laboratory School (2004).
