The DSCI staff, Kathryn Baumann-Reese, Barb Jones, Suzy Mannella, and Stephanie Lyons worked very hard to make it happen. Big thanks to two Ft. Dodge Sertoma Clubs for their generous contributions that supported the camp. Also, many thanks to others individuals and organizations for their donations. The campers, all Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Cochlear Implants (CI), Hearing, and even CODAs were great! They learned so much in one week and I saw a lot of potential in each of them in becoming great leaders for the future. They discovered the importance of all different kinds of cultures as well as the qualities for being a good leader such as Team Player, Listener, Positive Attitude, etc. Barb provided leadership tools in the workshop where campers learned of the communication, decision making, goal setting, etc… One night we had one hour of silent dinner where everyone could not use their voice and that also included the interpreters! It was very hard on a few hearing campers who did not know sign language. That provided a better understanding for them as to what Deaf/ HoH people go through daily with their frustrations. Sally Bowden, Activity Director, and DeAnne Carlson, Activity Co-Director, had many different fun activities such Caterpillar Hula Hoop, Beach Volleyball, Water Balloon Volleyball, and Circle Running, etc... The kids and staff had an awesome time with the water balloon fight! We had a very special visitor that came to visit us almost every night at the fire site, a young raccoon! His name was Rob. He was very cute and everyone was so fascinated with him. What was so special about him? DeAnne and I made sure he was not too close to the kids and coaxed him away from the fire site with marshmallows and we poured bird seeds with lots of sunflowers that Rob the Raccoon loved. He did not come back till the next night. The camp was well accommodated with sign language interpreters; Mary Brandt, Sue Tyrell, and Joe Trelstad and typewell captioner, Lisa Furney. Dixie Meyer showed up unexpectedly to volunteer as a counselor and assisted the interpreters with interpreting as well. Tara Von Walden also assisted Lisa with captioning on Friday. They all were very much appreciated. Thanks for an exceptional job! As the Chair for DSCI, I’m proud to tell you about Lacey Braunschweig; she attended camp twice (2005 & 2007). During 2007 JCP Camp Lacey explained how much she enjoyed the camp and she had learned a lot and she’d like to come back to the camp. Therefore, she made a recommendation to the DSCI Commissioners that there should be a JR Counselor. 7/5: 7:00 pm Families & Friends Community Night, Cedar Rapids Kernels Baseball, Veterans Memorial Stadium, 950 Rockford Rd SW Cedar Rapids, Dead- line to get tickets is July 1st, tickets are only avail- able at CSD-IA Office, for more information, contact Theresa Legg at tlegg@c-s-d.org; tlegg.csd.tv-VP 7/12: Rain or Shine, Deaf Awareness Picnic, Green- wood Park, 4500 Grand Ave. Des Moines, Admis- sion, Adults $5, Children 3-12 $3, age 3 & under free. 7/12: Noon 75th Anniversary Mascia’s Picnic at 4-H Building, Hwy. 122 & Eisenhower Ave. Mason City. No one other than Lacey had the honor to be the first JR Counselor for this year’s JCP Camp. She was a young model citizen, she did a fan- tastic job! I recommended to Suzy Mannella, the camp coordinator, that I’d like to see two JR counselors, one girl and one boy, that way boys can look up to him as well. Theresa Legg, Elaine Pudans, and Julie Birkenholtz did a super job as the cooks. Hershel Jackson, Nate Garrels, Justin Wittrock, Howie Kent, Nancy Feekes, Jeanne Torberson, and Jan Fletcher all volunteered as counselors. Spe- cial thanks to them for giving up their vacation time/work. Along with DSCI staff, we all worked as a team to help the camp succeed and made it enjoyable for everyone there. Big thanks to every- one! I am looking forward to 2009 JCP Camp! ; tlegg.csd.tv-VP 7/12: Rain or Shine, Deaf Awareness Picnic, Green- wood Park, 4500 Grand Ave. Des Moines, Admis- sion, Adults $5, Children 3-12 $3, age 3 & under free. 7/12: Noon 75th Anniversary Mascia’s Picnic at 4-H Building, Hwy. 122 & Eisenhower Ave. Mason City.
