Hearing and Service Dogs of Minnesota is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or disabled by creating mutually beneficial partnerships with specially trained dogs. Most hearing dogs are rescued from animal shelters.  They live with foster families during initial training and then are matched with their partner and continue team training for 16-18 weeks.  All services are provided to clients free of charge. The organization is supported by contributions from individuals, foundations and corporations. To learn more please visit our website at www.hsdm.org.

Hearing Dogs undergo at least two months training at the PAWS® Training Center where they learn to alert hearing impaired/deaf individuals to sounds that demand attention. All Hearing Dogs are trained to alert their owner to basic sounds like: a smoke alarm, an intruder, an alarm clock, the doorbell, a knock at the door, and the telephone/TDD ring.  In all cases but that of the smoke alarm, the dog is trained to bring the client to the sound. In the case of the smoke alarm, the dog is trained to take the client to the nearest exit. The trained dog goes through an additional two months of training in the home of the client under the direction of a local Field Instructor.
