A family reports both adults receiving weekly wages but the adult completing the application checks the box indicating no Social Security number. What should I do?

What should I do if I think an application is not accurate?

SFAs have an obligation to verify all questionable applications. Any verification that is done for cause is done inaddition to the sample required for either random or focused sampling. Also,verification efforts must not delay the approval of applications. If an application is complete and indicates a family is eligible for benefits, the application must be approved. Following approval, the verification process may begin. If a household fails to submit the requested information by the date specified, the family must be sent a notice of adverse action.

A grandparent has been named guardian of a grandchild. The grandchild gets Social Security benefits and the grandparent has a pension. What is the status of this household?

A farming family wants to apply. The wife gets a weekly paycheck from the farm. How is that handled? They also file Schedule F for taxes.

A man and his two children reside in the same house as a woman and her three children. He has filled out an application for his children but does not qualify. She has filled out an application for her three children and qualifies as reduced.

The adults in this situation should be contacted to confirm the information provided.  They may be two adults sharing a house as roommates, in which case they would be two economic units.  An economic unit is a group of related or unrelated people who share housing and/or all significant income and expenses of its members. Generally, individuals residing in the same house are one economic unit. Separate economic units in the same house are characterized by prorating expenses and economic independence from one another.  If they consider themselves one household, they should complete one application reporting all the income and all the household members.

What is the special milk program?

A farming family wants to apply. Both parents work on the farm. Neither one gets a paycheck from any source. How is this handled?

What does "HP" Mean?

A parent was laid off at the beginning of the school year and the children qualified for free meal benefits. In October, the parent was called back to work. The household would qualify for reduced benefits with the parent back at work.

The parent may reapply with the income from work reported after being called back to work and may decline to continue to receive free meal benefits.  Accept the new application and change the benefits.  Keep good records of this with the application.

A student was kicked out of the house and is staying with friends. Does this student qualify for free meals?
