Options for
Educational Choice provides parents with alternate educational opportunities
for their student. Options for
Educational Choice include Competent Private Instruction (CPI - the formal
instruction to children of compulsory attendance age outside the traditional
school setting), Post Secondary Education Options (PSEO providing limited
opportunities for high school students to pursue coursework not available in
their high school of attendance), and Charter Schools (a school established by
creating a new school within an existing public school or converting an
existing public school to charter status for the purpose of pursuing innovation
in education).

Charter schools are public schools of choice. In Iowa, schools obtain charters only with the approval and oversight of their local school district. In addition to schools directly operated by a school district, charter school are another way that communities can create new public education options and partnerships for their children.

Competent private instruction (CPI) is private
instruction provided to a child in Iowa. "Private instruction" means instruction using a plan and course of study
in a setting other than a public school district or accredited nonpublic
school. The CPI category includes both
home schooled children and those in non-accredited nonpublic "schools." Iowa Code section 299A.1; 281 IAC chapter 31.
