Goals


The English Language Learners (ELL) Team seeks to build the capacity of teacher educators and teacher candidates in educating Iowa's English language Learners (ELLs) by doing the following:
  • Providing opportunities for teacher educators and teacher candidates to improve teaching of culturally and linguistically diverse students.
  • Establishing a partnership among teams from Iowa's Institutions for Higher Education and the members of the Iowa Administrators' Second Language (L2) group.
  • The Administrators' L2 group seeks to increase their knowledge of second language acquisition, improve and increase capacity of ELL programs in their districts, and advise state leaders and other districts on best practices for ELLs.

Year Two activity will include the following:

  • Involving teacher educators and teacher candidates in the following professional development opportunities:
    • Iowa Culture and Language Conference (ICLC), February 12-14, 2007, Polk County Convention Center,, Des Moines, Iowa
    • Our Kids Summer Seminars for Educators of English Language Learners, July 31-August 2, Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa
  • Ongoing evaluation of the effect of participation in the ICLC and Our Kids seminars on teaching and learning
  • Expansion of the Administrators' L2 group to include teacher educators. Opportunities with this group include participation in a cultural immersion experience in Mexico in the spring and fall of 2007.
  • Technology resource--Twenty institutions will be selected to participate in a technology activity. Polycom IP Video Conferencing Units will be available for teacher educators' use at Local Education Agencies (LEAs) to observe the delivery of instruction to ELLs. Teacher educators and teacher candidates will have the opportunity to interact with classrooms and classroom teachers of culturally and linguistically diverse students.

Polycom Reports
In order to prepare pre-service teachers to successfully educate the growing number of English language learners, the TQE Grant awarded Polycom video conferencing units to four-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and local districts.

Technical Information

For your convenience, information for the original Program Contact and Tech Support was entered into the Video Conferencing Directory at http://207.28.94.183/Polycom/default.htm a statewide database of Polycom users (Original Polycom Awardees ). The database allows educators to connect with over 350 sites throughout the state. Please review/update your information at this site and enter LOCATION, IP ADDRESS, and CAMERA STATUS. Username and password: aea  

The Polycom unit will support one-to-one video conferencing sessions. However, you can schedule multi-point sessions, at no cost, through the Codian gateways available at the Codian Video Conference Gateway Database (Choose a 2-digit PIN) http://207.28.94.183/Codian/default.htm

Follow VSX information strand

Polycom Settings

·          Firewall:  The following ports should be opened: TCP ports 1720 and 3230-3253; UDP ports 3230-3253.

·          Enable Fixed Ports in settings.  Disable "H.460 Firewall" and disable "NAT is H.323 Compatible".

·          Polycom is set to manual IP with a static IP and associated DNS, Gateway, and Subnet mask. Set Auto LAN speed and Auto Duplex.

·          Codian MCU 4205.  See datasheet.

Additional Notes

1.        Connect LAN to Visual Concert to provide internet connection for multiple computers-Polycom must be powered on.

2.        Streaming capacity is designed for a LAN.

3.        Users need to install Polycom software (webcam included) to access a Polycom (point-to-point) session.

4.        A Codian session must be established for multicast Polycom sessions or streaming to no more than 60 computers.
