Goals

Iowa Department of Education Student Teacher Evaluation (IDESTE)
The Iowa Department of Education Student Teacher Evaluation (IDESTE) was created in 2005 by the Iowa Department of Education in collaboration with representatives of teacher preparation programs and K-12 teachers. The purpose was to provide a standardized statewide measure of student teachers in order to meet the U. S. Department of Education requirements for highly qualified new teachers under the No Child Left Behind legislation. The IDESTE is based on the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) principles and the Iowa Teaching Standards.

The IDESTE is not currently required by the Iowa Department of Education, but is used by a number of teacher preparation programs in the state. Two forms, elementary and secondary, are provided.

Alternative Assessment for Content Knowledge of Elementary Education Teacher Candidates

A plan was submitted by the State of Iowa to the U.S. Department of Education in May of 2006 addressing the requirement for highly qualified elementary teachers under the No Child Left Behind legislation. Included in that plan was the current use of Praxis II content tests for elementary education majors as an interim method of meeting the federal content knowledge requirements. Since then a grant-supported task force has created and is piloting an alternative content assessment system. When the work is completed, a recommendation will be provided to the Iowa Department of Education.
