The Iowa Department of Education’s Team Nutrition
Program and the State of Iowa Youth Advisory Council are sponsoring a symposium
to identify the problems and suggest solutions that make sense to Iowa high
school students on how to improve healthy school environments, communities and
their own personal eating and physical activity habits. Being a leader for change and a role model to
others will be emphasized.
The symposium will empower select youth with tools
and resources to return to their schools and take action steps to improve the
health environment. The symposium will
be November 19th at the Memorial Union at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa from
8:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. School teams will
offer insighful views on how best to address this age group’s health habits in
a day that is packed with great inforamtion and a lot of
interaction/participation via keypad polling.
Diana Reed, former Miss Iowa will speak on “Exercise Your Character”.
Twenty high schools from across the state of Iowa with a SIYAC member, are recruting teams of 4 to attend with one adult advisor. They will also have the opportunity to apply for a mini-grant worth up to $500 to activate a nutrition and physical activity program in their school.
