Reading Scores Are Among the Nation's Best: Iowa 4th graders rank 9th in the nation in reading in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). NAR

Reading Scores Are Among the Nation's Best: Iowa 8th graders rank 7th in the nation in reading in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). NAR

Math Scores Are Among the Nation's Best: Iowa ranks 10th in the nation for having the highest proportion of public school 4th graders scoring at the highest two levels in math in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). RCM

Math Scores Are Among the Nation's Best: Iowa 8th graders score 8th highest in the nation in math in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). RCM

Math Scores Are Up: The proportion of Iowa public school 4th graders who scored at the highest two levels in mathematics in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) increased by 64% between 1996 and 2003. RCM

Science Scores Are Among the Nation's Best: Iowa ranks 2nd in the nation for having the highest percentage of public school 4th graders scoring at the highest two levels in science. RCS

ACT Scores Are Among the Nation's Best: Iowa's ACT college entrance examination scores are among the top 2 out of the 25 states where the ACT is the primary college entrance exam taken and a majority of graduating seniors take the exam. ACT

More Public Schools Offer AP Courses: Since 1996 the proportion of Iowa public schools offering AP courses has increased by 61%. AP

AP Scores Are Among the Nation's Best: Iowa public school students are among the highest scoring in the nation on the Advanced Placement (AP) exam. Iowa students have the 5th highest average AP scores in the nation. AP

AP Scores Are Among the Nation's Best: In Iowa, 69% of public high school students taking Advanced Placement (AP) exams earn a score high enough to qualify for college credit. Iowa is one of the top 6 states in the proportion of public high school AP exam takers earning such high scores. AP

Public School Students Outperform Private School Students on AP Exams: In Iowa, public school students score higher than private school students on their Advanced Placement (AP) exams. AP

Among the Best in the Nation in Students Receiving a High Score on AP Calculus Exams: Iowa is one of the top 9 states in the nation in the proportion of students (77%) who have received a score high enough to earn college credit on the Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus exam. CCS

Best in the Nation in Students Receiving a High Score on AP Science Exams: Iowa is the #1 state in the nation in the proportion of students (74%) who have received a score high enough to earn college credit on an Advanced Placement (AP) Science exam. CCS

Among the Best in the Nation in Students Taking Advanced Math Courses: Iowa is one of the top 9 states in the nation in the proportion of students taking trigonometry and pre-calculus. CCS

Among the Best in the Nation in Students Taking Advanced Science Courses: Iowa is one of the top 4 states in the nation in the percentage of high school students taking upper level science courses. CCS

One of the Best Graduation Rates in the Country: Iowa's public high school graduation rate is among the top 3 in the country. EDP

Among the Best in the Nation in Students Going on to College: The National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education gives Iowa a grade of 88 for the proportion of students who go on to college, which is one of the 7 highest scores in the country. HE

Second in the nation for students who graduate from college:  Iowa students are among the most likely to successfully complete the education pipeline -- completion of college within four years of high school graduation, according to the Education Pipeline, Achieve 2006 by Achieve.

Among the Best in National Teacher Certification: Iowa is one of the top 12 states in the proportion of public school teachers who have received certification from the prestigious National Board of Professional Teaching Standards. NBP and NEF
More Teachers Nationally Certified: The number of Iowa teachers being honored with certification from the prestigious National Board of Professional Teaching Standards has increased 79% since 2000. NBP
Middle and High School Science Teachers Are Among the Most Qualified in the Nation: Iowa is one of the top 5 states in the nation in proportion of 7th through 12th grade public school science teachers with majors in their field. CCS

Among the Nation's "Smartest States": Iowa has been named as one of the eight "smartest states" in the country based on the quality of its public elementary and secondary schools. ESR

Gifted and Talented Program Among the Nation's Largest: Iowa leads the nation in the size and scope of its gifted and talented program. It is the #1 state in the nation in the percentage of public primary schools with a gifted and talented program and one of the top 3 states in the nation in the percentage of public secondary schools with a gifted and talented program. ESR
Widespread Internet Access: Almost all of the public schools in Iowa (97%) have internet access. MDR
Computers Are Highly Available: There is one computer available for instruction for every 2.7 public school students in Iowa, making Iowa one of the top 6 states in computer availability for students. MDR
Among the Leading States in School Attendance: Iowa is one of the top 3 states in the country in the percentage of public school 8th graders attending schools without an absenteeism problem. EWQ
Students Show Up to School on Time: Iowa is one of the top 7 states in the country in the percentage of public school 8th graders attending schools without a tardiness problem. EWQ
Classroom Behavior Is Among the Nation's Best: Iowa is one of the top 10 states in the country in the percentage of public school 8th graders attending schools without a clasroom behavior problem. EWQ
Parents Are Getting Involved: Parents in Iowa are getting involved in their children's education. In Iowa, 93% of 4th grade parents participate in parent-teacher conferences. EWQ
Schools Are Safe: No schools in Iowa were identified as "persistently dangerous" under the new "No Child Left Behind" law. EWQ
