Iowa children have the opportunity for nutritious meals in the summer. Iowa's Summer Food Service Program is the single largest resource available to local sponsors who want to combine a feeding program with a summer activity program. Several types of agencies can offer Summer Food Service Programs.
Open sites operate in low-income areas where half or more of the children are from households with income at or below 185% of the Federal poverty guidelines. Meals are provided at no charge to any child at the open site. Enrolled sites provide meals only to children who are enrolled in an activity program, such as a day camp at the site. In order for an enrolled site to participate in the program, at least 50% of the children must be from households with incomes at or below 185% of the poverty level. Residential camps and nonresidential camps may participate regardless of the location and are reimbursed only for eligible participants. SFSP Programs in IowaSummer Food Service Program Sites in Iowa

The Bureau’s focus has been to increase the number of schools participating, using outreach techniques. Average daily participation also has shown steady growth, from approximately 6600 in June 2002 to over 10000 in June 2006. Similar growth has been experienced in July and August. Many programs operate only in June and July.
