The State Board of Education consists of ten members: nine voting members who are appointed by the governor for six-year terms and subject to Senate confirmation; and one nonvoting student member who serves a one-year term, also appointed by the governor.

Charlie Edwards joined the State Board in 2000. He is Dean of two colleges at Drake University: School of Journalism and Mass Communication and College of Business and Public Administration. He is a former Publisher and President of the Des Moines Register. Edwards is a member of numerous boards, including the Gardner and Florence Call Cowles Foundation, Iowa College Foundation, and the Des Moines Art Center. Charlie is from Des Moines. He earned his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Colorado. |

Sister Jude Fitzpatrick of West Des Moines was named to the State Board of Education in 2002. She now serves as vice-chancellor for the Diocese of Des Moines after completing two terms as President of the Congregation of the Humility of Mary. Prior to that, she served the Diocese of Des Moines as superintendent of schools for 12 years and assistant superintendent for three years. She also served as principal of St. Theresa's school in Des Moines, and was a classroom instructor. |

Brian Gentry of Des Moines joined the State Board in 2006. He is Associate General Counsel with Wells Fargo Home Mortgage in West Des Moines. He formerly served as the General Counsel for Iowa Governor Thomas J. Vilsack and Iowa Lieutenant Governor Sally J. Pederson. Brian has served on numerous boards and commissions, including Children and Families of Iowa, ChildServe, and the Governor's Achievement Gap Taskforce. Brian received his bachelor of arts degree from Lake Forest College and his juris doctorate degree from the University of Iowa. |

Joan James of Marshalltown joined the State Board in 2008. She is a Spanish-language interpreter at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center and co-owner of an auto sales business. Jaimes earned a bachelor’s degree in Human Services from Buena Vista University and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Human Services. She has served on the Community First School Committee with the Marshalltown School District.

Valorie Kruse of Sioux City joined the State Board in 2008. She has worked as long- and short-term substitute teacher in the Sergeant-Bluffs and Sioux City School Districts. Kruse was a member of the Sioux City School Board for seven years and has served on many of its committees, including the strategic planning committee and the district advisory board. She earned a bachelor’s degree in secondary English with a minor in history from Morningside College.

Wayne Kobberdahl of Council Bluffs joined the State Board in 2004. He is retired from Iowa State University, where he was a community development specialist for 27 years. He also was a professor at Waldorf College, a research associate at University of Nebraska, and a public school teacher in North Dakota and California. Kobberdahl has served on the Iowa Western Community College Board of Trustees and as president of the Iowa Association of Community College Trustees. He is active in numerous community and state organizations focused on rural and economic development, as well as social, cultural, and educational issues.

Max Phillips was appointed in September 2005 to the State Board for a term expiring April 2014. Phillips is President of Qwest Communications in Iowa and former President of the Woodward-Granger school board. He was elected to three terms as mayor of Bouton, Iowa, from 1981-1986. Phillips served for seven years as co-chair of Iowa's Small Business Advisory Council and has participated in various economic development and educational reform initiatives at the state level, including the Iowa Learns Council. Phillips earned a masters in business administration from the University of Iowa, as well as a master's degree from Concordia Seminary.

LaMetta Wynn joined the State Board in 2008. She was a member of the Clinton Community School District school board for 12 years and also served on the Mount St. Clare (now Ashford University) College Board. Wynn served as mayor of Clinton for 12 years before she recently retired. She has a nursing degree from St. Luke's Hospital and is a retired R.N. She will serve as the chair of the hospital board in Clinton next year.

Kameron Dodge was appointed in May 2007 to the State Board for a one-year term, which expires in May 2008. Dodge is from Cambridge and is an 11th-grade student at North Polk Junior-Senior High School in Alleman. He is active in his school, serving on the student council and several school and district committees. In addition, he is active in football, tennis, baseball, mock trial, marching band, jazz band, and drama. He also serves as a band mentor and a role model to students at the elementary level. He is a strong academic student and enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP) classes as a freshman and sophomore. Dodge is a National Honor Society member. |
