Elementary Statewide Reading Team |

The Elementary Statewide Reading Team is a group of approximately 43 people
representing Iowa Department of Education consultants, consultants from the
Iowa Area Education Agencies (AEA), Elementary school principals, as well as
central office staff such as curriculum directors. The primary purpose of
the Elementary Statewide Elementary Reading Team (SWRT) is to support schools
in accelerating reading achievement at the elementary level. This
includes supporting effective implementation of Iowa’s Reading First Plan.
The focus of this team’s work will be to determine implications
for regional and state actions by engaging in the following activities:
- Study
implementation of Self-Initiating and Reading First plans at an individual
building as well as at a district, regional, and state level.
- Study
the impact on student performance in the area of reading.
- Study
the research base related to instructional practices that support growth
in reading achievement.
- Study
the research base related to structured school and professional
development.
- Determine
areas that need strengthening and the actions necessary for supporting school
staffs.
- Designing
and delivering professional development and technical assistance to
Self-Initiating and Reading First personnel at a building, district,
regional or state level as needed.
- Designing
and delivering professional development and technical assistance to AEA
and LEA personnel with limited experience in supporting Self-Initiating
and Reading First schools as needed.
- Disseminating
materials and information related to the Every Child Reads: Excellence in
Teaching and Learning Professional Development Materials.
