Collaborative
Strategic Reading (CSR) combines
the essential reading comprehension strategies that have been demonstrated to
be effective in improving students’ understanding of text with cooperative
learning groups or paired learning. The goal of CSR is to improve
students’ reading comprehension and increase their conceptual learning. CSR
procedures are designed to maximize students’ engagement and help all students
to be successful in heterogeneous or mixed learning level classrooms.
CSR takes advantage of the growing knowledge among educators that learners need to be taught multiple specific strategies to enhance their understanding of a text but should not be overwhelmed with so many strategies that they are unable to decide which ones to use. The CSR Teacher Development Academy (TDA) is designed for school teams that include teachers and principals from elementary (upper grades) and middle schools. This TDA has been completed. Professional development materials for CSR were made in cooperation between the Department of Education, the Marshalltown and Fort Dodge school districts, and exteranal consultant, Alison Boardman. These materials, including DVD demsonstrations of CSR, are available through AEA reading teams. 2005-06 and 2006-2007 Participating Schools Contact Information
