Announcements from EC Four Year College Partners
Tuesday, 15 July 2008
The University of Northern Iowa (UNI) has a new EC Endorsement program being offered online and through the ICN. The Endorsement is #100 Prek-Grade 3, Unified, and consists of 15 credits. The first group of students started in May, 2008 and will finish in Summer of 2009. They plan to start a new group in May of 2009. For more information, contact Jill Uhlenberg at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . UNI is offering this as graduate level coursework. TEACH can still put these students on a Bachelor’s Scholarship, but can only pay the undergraduate tuition rate (currently $231 per credit hour). Students pay the difference in the rates.

Ashford University, in Clinton Iowa, has just heard from the Board of Educational Examiners that their PreKK Endorsement (#103) has been approved. They plan to begin offering courses in late September at the Ashford Preschool facility at night for undergraduate and graduate credit. They hope to develop online programs soon. For more information, contact Joen Rottler at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . In the fall, TEACH would be able to sponsor Bachelor’s Scholarships for those working on the Endorsement and/or working on a degree in Elementary Education WITH the Endorsement. Since Ashford is a private university, TEACH would sponsor the scholarships at the undergraduate public tuition rate and students would pay the difference.

National Parenting Education Network (NPEN)
Monday, 19 May 2008
NPEN is the National Parenting Education Network. NPEN is a group of parenting education professionals, researchers, program administrators, and others striving to build the field of parenting education by networking and making connections to move the field forward. In order to expand participation, NPEN is currently developing an outreach plan to increase state involvement.

NPEN is comprised of practitioners who provide parenting education as a primary part of their work. NPEN has local, state, and national structures for resources and support. It is bound together by commonly accepted principles, notably the principles of embeddedness and inclusivity.

This means that NPEN takes the position that one goal of parenting education is to provide access to parenting education resources for all parents and recognizes that parenting education is embedded in a large number of organizations and fields, all of which are important in addressing NPEN's goals.

NPEN seeks to represent the interests and needs of the many professionals, paraprofessionals and volunteers who serve as parenting educators.

NPEN is governed by a council of 20-25 members who set the policy and establish the projects to be pursued.

Qualifications for Preschool Teacher Assistants
Monday, 19 May 2008

A variety of federal and state programs regulate the qualifications required for teaching assistants in preschool programs (assistants are sometimes described as paraeducators, paraprofessionals, associate’s, aides, and other descriptions).

The type of preschool program and required program standards determines the type of qualifications required for teaching assistants. For example, in Shared Visions programs, assistants may carry either a Child Development Associate (CDA) or an associate’s degree in an early childhood related area to meet the qualifications. In Title I programs, assistants may have up to five options available to them if their district has adopted local assessments. The qualification options that teaching assistants in each program may choose in order to meet the requirements are listed in the following documents.
