Judy Harrison, Bureau Chief (515) 281-6538 Robert Haxton, Program Manager (515) 281-6539
The department is responsible for administering and enforcing the state's Food Code (Iowa Code chapter 137F) by conducting food safety inspections at food establishments (grocery stores, restaurants and convenience stores) and food processing plants. The purpose of the Iowa Food Code is to "safeguard the public health and provide to consumers, food that is safe, unadulterated and honestly prepared."
Through time, Iowa has developed a joint state and local inspection program. DIA has entered into contracts with counties and cities to perform food inspections for 85 percent of the state. The department's 14 environmental specialists cover 20 counties in Iowa, while inspectors from 30 local health departments conduct food safety inspections in 79 counties and five municipalities. In addition to food safety inspections, the department is responsible for sanitation inspections at barber and cosmetology shops, and hotels and motels.
Beginning July 1, 2008, all food establishments in Iowa will be inspected according to the 2005 Iowa Food Code. The Food Code is based upon food safety recommendations developed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in consultation with representatives from the food industry and regulators. The Iowa Food Code, adopted by the General Assembly in 2007, is based on scientifically developed factors focusing on public health and the prevention of foodborne illness.
