SOCIAL AND CHARITABLE GAMBLING

The Department of Inspections and Appeals (Department) administers Iowa Code Chapter 99B, which regulates charitable gambling (bingo, games of skill or chance, and raffles), social gambling, and amusement devices.  Qualified organizations may obtain a gambling license to conduct fund-raising activities benefiting educational, civic, public, charitable, patriotic, or religious purposes.  Bars may obtain a social gambling license which permits patrons to bet in small stakes card and parlor games between individuals who have a social relationship and permits the bar to conduct a Sports Betting Pool.  A social gambling license does not permit licensees to conduct poker tournaments, poker runs or raffles.

The appropriate license must first be issued by the Department of Inspections and Appeals before any type of social or charitable gambling activity occurs.  A license may be applied for and paid by credit card, debit card or Electronic Funds Transfer through the Social and Charitable Gambling Web Site at https://dia.iowa.gov/scg/.
