The Taxpayer
Services and Policy Division
believes that a knowledgeable taxpayer complies with the tax laws, which
increases revenue collections. New and expanded programs promote
voluntary tax compliance through tax information and education
services.
Taxpayer Services
Section
- In-house Taxpayer Service Specialists
assist more than 1 million taxpayers by telephone, e-mail, mail, Internet,
or in person, each year.
- Five Taxpayer Service Specialists throughout
the state give more than 350 presentations annually to almost 7,000 taxpayers
and businesses that desire to learn more about Iowa taxes. In addition,
these specialists contact almost 1,400 new businesses to provide one-on-one
assistance in explaining tax statutes and to troubleshoot problem areas,
to assist local tax officials, and conduct seminars to address tax issues,
law changes, and reporting requirements
Audit Services
Section

- Resolves protests
Protests can be
resolved through informal settlement or through formal proceedings,
including appeals to the director,
the State Board of Tax Review, and the Iowa District Court. Staff
or attorneys review protests, obtain information on each case, and
represent the department.
