Record Keeping

Whether e-filed or paper-filed, copies of income tax returns, worksheets and schedules should be kept by taxpayers for at least three years for audit purposes.

Amending an Iowa return

Wait until your original return is processed before you amend your Iowa return. If you were expecting a refund, wait until you receive the refund. If you receive a paper check, cash it.

You have two choices to amend, regardless of how you filed initially. These options are available if the original return was filed on paper, e-filed, or TeleFiled.

  1. Amend your return using the IA 1040X. It will take approximately 6 months to process.
  2. Amend your return electronically through companies that provide state-only filing. This will take about 30 days for our department to process.
