- File electronically. Electronically filed returns are processed faster and are more accurate than those filed on paper. Additional information may be found at: http://www.iowa.gov/tax/elf/eservice.html
- Iowa scans paper returns using barcodes. Delays occur if the information cannot be read by the scanner. Please reprint the return if:
- Any information is smeared
- You have made changes to the return after it was printed
- Enter all information requested (ex: name, address, social security numbers of taxpayer and spouse, county, and school district) and check all applicable boxes.
- Review the income tax form instructions to ensure computations are correct and required schedules included.
- Check line 27 of the IA 1040 (line 5 of the IA 1040A) to be sure the correct federal refund amount has been entered.
- Use the correct tax table for the form used. Iowa 1040 (long form) and 1040A (short form) tax tables are different.
- Send copies of all W-2s and 1099s, including those for unemployment.
- Include a complete copy of the federal income tax return.
- Before mailing, review the mailing address information.
- Penmanship counts on handwritten returns.
- If you have reviewed the income tax return instructions and have questions, please send an e-mail to: idr@iowa.gov
