                           Arts for Children Education Program

                                         “Ocean Connections Through the Arts"

                                Area Education Agencies

                          Professional Development Course

Once again, VSA arts of Iowa proudly offers a new 15-hour, one-credit course through our “Arts for Children” education program.  This program offers the only course utilizing the arts in meeting the needs of children experiencing disabilities or “at risk” conditions. Focusing on integration in the classroom is a perfect fit for your educators, counselors, administrators, and childcare providers’ staff and professional development requirements while meeting district and AEA goals.

The AFC 2008-2009 curriculum presents the latest information on “Ocean Connections Through the Arts”.  Methods will be demonstrated for using visual arts, music, drama and movement in all subject areas, pre-school to adult. Our activities concentrate on techniques and ideas for teaching children with disabilities and at risk conditions in an inclusive setting.  A one-hour session on Autism Spectrum Disorders is included.

The course is facilitated by experienced music and art consultants trained in using the arts with children who have disabilities.  It promises participants an exciting and informative session! To sign up, contact your AEA Today!

Following the course, participants can hire an “artist in the classroom”.  They may select from over twenty artists with disabilities who will visit their classrooms for two or three hours. The artists interact with students teaching not only their art form, but also strength and hope.  The cost for an “artist in the classroom” is $15 hour/per artist.  Program grants and donations cover the remaining cost, an additional $33/hour + all other expenses.

Last year, we served over 10,000 students and 250 teachers across Iowa. This year, we hope to increase the number of teachers and students served by offering this course with fresh information at every AEA and several districts.
